Dorothy's Story

Have you ever had an injury that completely changed your life, even for a short time? Did you need special medical equipment to heal or mobility equipment to protect you from further harm while healing?

Have you ever lost your income because of something like this or other unexpected and disabling event in your life and gotten behind in your bills, helpless to prevent your utilities being turned off or at risk of losing your home?

WHAT IF, after all this has happened, you are told you will be crippled for the rest of your life and will need even more medical help in the future? You probably thought, "Will the nightmare never end?" OR you might have prayed and asked God to help you cope and to send good people into your life to help you. Will you be that someone for my friend?

Her name is Dorothy and she is experiencing all of these events and worries right now. She can only move a few feet. The pain is excruciating. Her left knee has swollen to the size of a small pumpkin and she can no longer bend or control her left leg at all. The swelling has not been responding to treatment and is creating complications with her nerves and circulation. Her right leg is also at risk of this happening in the near future. We don't know yet what medical or mobility equipment she will need after her appointment with the specialist coming up soon.

Her and her husband both had cancer three years ago and beat it. He cares deeply for her, is a really good cook and helps her at home. After their cancer surgeries, everyday life got back on a more or less steady track, until the day she thought she had twisted her knee. She iced it at home for awhile as every doctor advises. After a couple of weeks of no improvement and increased swelling, she sought help from her doctor. When the tests came back, the doctor told her she has Osteporosis, already advanced to stage four - severe.

She had no prior knowledge of this disease in her or her family, even with all the doctors she had seen and tests that had been taken in the three years before then. It is said that Osteoporosis is a "silent" disease, until bones start breaking with simple everyday movements. Fractures are common, frequent and a life-long, daily risk. Learn more at MayoClinic. Her legs are the first casualties.

Dorothy has always been an independent, go-getter with a positive attitude and strong faith. Even so, this is a lot to deal with. It's about the challenges of the present, but also preparation for the future. She needs HOPE...and HELP.

With Your help, we can set her up for a fulfilling future in spite of this life-altering change. It doesn't have to be the end, but to make it a New Beginning we need Your help.

In addition to financial support for medical needs, utility bills and bone-healthy foods, we are also looking for information about how to obtain either a handicap-equipped vehicle or a vehicle lift. If you know of a way we might acquire either of these in good functional condition, please write to the email below.
